Position Summary

The Controller will report directly to the CFO and will be responsible for day to day accounting functions (G/L, A/P, A/R and Payroll); developing financial reports for the use of the CFO, senior staff, and program staff; cash management; and maintaining financial systems and internal controls. The Controller supervises the Senior Accountant and Grants Accountant, managing a team of 4. The ideal candidate will have a degree in Accounting; possess good communication, and organizational skills, strong ERP skills and Excel skills and have experience working in a non-profit environment and with managing staff. The position is based in Arlington, VA.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for month-end closing and financial statement preparation and analysis in an accurate and timely manner
  • Management of accounting operations, to include G/L, A/R, A/P and Payroll
  • Cash management and bank reconciliations
  • Work with external auditors on annual financial audits
  • Direct the finance department's overall policy and procedure manual
  • Manage all accounting functions to ensure proper maintenance of systems and appropriate internal controls
  • Manage and oversee all financial systems to ensure timely, accurate and high quality data
  • Work closely and transparently with all external partners including audit firm, banking institutions, financial and other consultants, as well as vendors
  • Maintain proper financial reporting and general ledger administration
  • Review and submit semi-monthly payroll
  • This is a supervisory role with two direct reports and a team of 4 staff

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited school, CPA designation and at least 5 years in a senior accounting or finance position
  • Experience managing multiple staff
  • Advanced user of Excel
  • Proficient in Dynamics SL(Solomon)
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills; must be able to interact and communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization
  • Innovative thinker, with a track record for problem solving and developing action plans and managing output
  • Must be able to adapt to a dynamic and growth-oriented culture and work well in a team environment
  • Ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills
  • Previous work experience in a non-profit organization is desired
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Payroll experience preferred
  • Passion for the outdoors essential
